Google Voice answering service: a Google Voice AI receptionist and Google Voice call answering service that books into Google Calendar
Plenty of small businesses run their whole phone on Google Voice. It came bundled with Google Workspace, it costs $10 a user, it rings the laptop and the cell, and it transcribes voicemail. What it does not do is answer the phone when nobody picks up. The call rolls to a greeting, and most new callers hang up and ring the next business on the list instead of leaving a message.

The short answer
Google Voice does not include an answering service. Its plans offer voicemail with transcription and, from the $20 Standard plan, a keypress auto attendant and ring groups, but nothing that holds a conversation or books an appointment. To add one you forward the Google Voice number to an answering service, port the number to a provider, or publish a separate answered number that transfers to Google Voice. PhoneAgent.ai answers those calls 24/7, books into Google Calendar and costs a flat $89 a month for about 150 calls. One caveat matters: Google's own help center says forwarding a Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported, so the most dependable setup is a port or a separate number.
PhoneAgent.ai fills that gap. It answers the calls your Google Voice line would have sent to voicemail, says up front that it is your AI assistant, answers questions about your hours, prices and services, and books the appointment straight into the Google Calendar you already use. The one thing worth knowing before you set it up is how the call gets from Google Voice to us, because Google has an opinion about that, and this page tells you exactly what it is.

Why it works
What your team gets with a Google Voice answering service
Answers what Google Voice sends to voicemail
Every call your Google Voice number would have dropped into a greeting gets a live answer instead, day or night, including several at once when the phone gets busy.
Books into your Google Calendar
If you are on Google Voice you are almost certainly on Google Calendar. It checks real availability and books the appointment during the call, then texts the caller a confirmation.
Keeps your number and your listings
You keep the number on your website and Google Business Profile. Choose forwarding, a port or a separate answered line, and we tell you plainly which one Google supports.
What it handles
Answered, disclosed and booked on autopilot
The AI receptionist answers every call 24/7, discloses it is your AI assistant, qualifies and routes the caller, answers your FAQs, and books the appointment straight into your calendar, then texts a confirmation and, on Professional and above, syncs the contact to your CRM.
- Answers every call 24/7 in your business name
- Books appointments into Google Calendar during the call
- Answers hours, pricing, service area and policy questions
- Transfers urgent callers to your Google Voice number or cell
- Texts missed callers back automatically
- Sends a summary of every call by text and email
Why PhoneAgent.ai
One AI receptionist that handles the whole call
Not a voicemail box, not a phone tree, and not a message-only answering service. Answer, disclose, qualify, route and book in one place, honest with every caller.
Answers every call
It answers on the first ring, 24/7, discloses it is your AI assistant, and holds a natural conversation, so no caller is ever sent to voicemail.
Honest and consent-aware
It tells callers it is an AI, recording is optional and consent-aware per state, and outbound texts are TCPA-aware with opt-outs honored.
Books the appointment
Callers get booked straight into your calendar, texted a confirmation and, on qualifying plans, synced to your CRM, so the appointment is on the books before you check.

Five ways to get your Google Voice calls answered, and what each one costs
Google Voice prices are from Google's Voice plans page and the answering service figures from each provider's own rate card, checked in September 2026. Costs are per month for a small business taking about 80 calls.
| Setup | What the caller gets | Books appointments | Monthly cost | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Google Voice Starter on its own | A voicemail greeting, transcribed for you | No | $10 per user | Most new callers do not leave a message |
| Google Voice Standard auto attendant | A keypress menu and ring groups | No | $20 per user | Still voicemail if nobody in the group answers |
| Forward to PhoneAgent.ai as a linked number | A conversation, answers and a booked appointment | Yes, into Google Calendar | $89 flat, about 150 calls, plus Google Voice | Google calls forwarding to an automated system unsupported |
| Port the number, then answer with PhoneAgent.ai | Same as above, on your original number | Yes, into Google Calendar | $89 flat, about 150 calls | The port takes days and the number leaves Google Voice |
| Separate answered number that transfers to Google Voice | The AI answers first and warm-transfers to your team | Yes, into Google Calendar | $199 Professional, which adds warm transfer | You update the number on your listings |
| Live answering service with forwarding | A person who takes a message, sometimes books | Varies, often extra | About $374 to $1,725 at 80 calls | Billed by the minute or the call |
Live answering costs are the range from our 18 September 2026 rate-card check of AnswerHero, MAP Communications, Posh, Smith.ai and Ruby at 80 calls. A human service is not an automated system, so Google's forwarding caveat does not apply to it. Confirm current pricing with each provider before you buy.
Does Google Voice have an answering service?
No. Google Voice gives you voicemail with transcription on every plan, and on the $20 Standard and $30 Premier plans it adds auto attendants and ring groups. None of the plan descriptions on Google's pricing page includes anything that talks to a caller, answers a question or books an appointment. When nobody picks up, the caller hears a greeting.
That is fine for existing clients who know you will call back. It is a poor result for a new customer who found you on Google and is phoning three businesses to see who answers. Check your own Google Voice history for calls with no voicemail attached: those are the callers who heard the greeting and left, and they are disproportionately the new ones.
So a Google Voice answering service is really two parts: Google Voice keeps doing what it is good at (numbers, calling from any device, texting, voicemail), and a separate service answers the calls nobody on your team can take. If you are weighing a keypress auto attendant against an AI receptionist, the short version is that a menu routes a caller and a receptionist resolves the call.
How do I connect an AI receptionist to my Google Voice number?
There are three ways, and they differ in how dependable they are.
1. Add the answering service as a linked number. In Google Voice settings, under Account, you add a new linked number and Google verifies it with a code, by text for a mobile number or by a call for a landline. Calls to your Google Voice number then ring that linked number. You can link up to six numbers, you cannot link a number that is already linked to another Google Voice account, and the feature is not available to SIP Link users. This is the fastest setup and it works for many businesses, but read the next section before you rely on it.
2. Port the number away from Google Voice. If your number was the business number long before Google Voice, you can move it. On Google Workspace, an admin finds the port-out code in the Admin console under Apps, Google Workspace, Google Voice, Number porting, Port-out info, and the receiving provider starts the port. Once the number lives with a provider that answers it, there is nothing in between to break. The tradeoff is that the number stops being a Google Voice number, so your team stops using the Google Voice apps on that line.
3. Publish a separate answered number. PhoneAgent.ai gives you a number that it answers. You put that number on your website and Google Business Profile, keep Google Voice for your team and your outbound calls, and set the AI to warm-transfer callers who need a person to your Google Voice number. A transfer is an ordinary call to your Google Voice number, so nothing about it depends on forwarding. You do have to update your listings, which is why most businesses choose this when they are already changing numbers or opening a new location.
Whichever route you pick, the rest of the setup is the same: you tell it your hours, services, prices and FAQs, connect Google Calendar, and it is answering the same day.
Can Google Voice forward calls to an AI receptionist?
Technically it will ring any linked number you verify, but Google's help center says in plain words that forwarding calls from your Google Voice number to an automated system is unsupported. In practice that means Google does not promise it works and will not help if it stops. Google Voice's own community forum has a thread from a business owner whose forwarding to an AI receptionist stopped working, which is exactly the risk that wording describes.
We would rather tell you that here than have you find out on a Saturday. Our recommendation is simple. If the Google Voice number is only one of several ways customers reach you and a dropped call is an annoyance, the linked-number setup is quick and many businesses run on it. If the number is on your trucks, your signs and ten years of directory listings, port it or use a separate answered number, because either one removes Google Voice from the path of the call.
This caveat is specific to automated answering. A human answering service is not an automated system, which is why several live services publish Google Voice forwarding instructions. You pay for that difference: at 80 calls a month the live services we priced run from about $374 to $1,725, against $89 flat for PhoneAgent.ai.
How much does a Google Voice answering service cost?
Add the answering service to what you already pay Google. Google Voice runs $10 per user on Starter, $20 on Standard and $30 on Premier. On top of that:
PhoneAgent.ai is a flat $89 a month on Starter for one number and about 150 calls, $199 on Professional for two numbers, about 500 calls and warm transfer, and $399 on Practice for up to five numbers and locations and about 1,500 calls. Pay yearly and you get two months free. There is no per-minute meter, so a long call about a complicated job costs the same as a short one. The full plan comparison lists what each tier includes.
Live answering services bill by the minute or by the call. At 80 calls a month, our September 2026 check of published rate cards put them between about $374 (AnswerHero) and $1,725 (Ruby), and several charge again for each appointment booked. If you want to see how the meters compare across the whole market, the answering service cost breakdown prices every published plan per call.
For a one-location business already on Google Workspace, the realistic total is Google Voice Starter plus PhoneAgent.ai Starter: $99 a month for a phone that rings everyone's devices and a receptionist that answers when none of them can.
Is a Google Voice auto attendant enough?
It is enough if your callers mostly know who they want. The Standard plan's auto attendant plays a menu, sends the caller to the right person or ring group, and falls back to voicemail. For an office where most calls are clients asking for their account manager, that routing is worth the $10 a user upgrade.
It is not enough when the calls are new business. A prospect asking whether you service their town, what a first visit costs and whether you have anything Thursday does not want a menu. They want the answer and a time. An AI receptionist answers the questions you have given it, books the slot in Google Calendar, texts the confirmation, and sends you a summary, and it handles several of those calls at once. Where the caller really needs a person, it transfers to your Google Voice number on the rules you set.
Many businesses run both: the auto attendant for the existing clients who dial extensions, and the AI for everything that would otherwise reach voicemail. If after-hours calls are the main gap, the after-hours answering service page covers that setup on its own.
Which businesses on Google Voice does this fit?
It fits small teams that live in Google Workspace and sell by appointment: consultants, agencies, accountants and bookkeepers, home service companies, cleaners, tutors, therapists and wellness practices, photographers, and real estate teams. The common pattern is two to ten people, Google Calendar as the schedule, and a phone that rings everyone's laptop at once and still goes unanswered when they are all on a job or in a meeting.
It fits less well if every call has to be written into a practice management or field service system, because PhoneAgent.ai books into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly or Acuity and sends each call summary by text and email rather than writing into industry software. It also fits less well if your business depends entirely on a Google Voice number you cannot port or change and you are not comfortable with an unsupported forwarding setup. In that case a live answering service with forwarding is the safer, and more expensive, choice.
If what you mainly need is to stop losing the callers who hang up, the missed-call text back feature sends every one of them a text within seconds, whichever setup you choose.
