Pay as you go answering service: pay as you go telephone answering service and call answering service plans priced at 10, 30 and 75 calls

Almost every US pay as you go answering service still charges a $20 to $49 monthly base fee. Only AnswerAmerica (prepaid, $1.47 a call) and Smith.ai's free AI plan ($3.00 a call after 25) have none. Priced at 10, 30 and 75 calls from each provider's own pricing page, with the call count where a flat plan becomes cheaper.

A pay as you go answering service bills only for the calls or minutes it answers, but in the United States almost every one still charges a monthly base fee of $20 to $49 on top. Checked on each provider's own site in September 2026, only two US options have no base fee at all: AnswerAmerica's prepaid credits at $1.47 a call and Smith.ai's free AI plan at $3.00 a call after the first 25. Pay as you go is the cheapest choice below roughly 10 to 30 calls a month. Above that, a flat plan such as PhoneAgent.ai at $89 usually costs less.

That is the short answer. The longer one matters because "pay as you go" means three different things depending on who is selling it: a monthly fee plus a per-call rate, a monthly fee plus a per-minute rate, or prepaid credits you top up. Each behaves differently when your call volume moves, and the plan that looks cheapest on the pricing page is often not the one with the lowest invoice. So instead of repeating starting prices, this page prices every published US plan at the same three volumes: 10, 30 and 75 calls a month, at a three minute average call.

What is the cheapest pay as you go answering service?

At 10 calls a month, Smith.ai's free AI plan costs nothing and AnswerAmerica costs $14.70, which makes them the cheapest by a wide margin. At 30 calls, AnswerAmerica ($44.10) and Smith.ai's AI plan ($15.00) still lead, and the cheapest live per-minute option is Professional Answering Service at $126. By 75 calls, a flat plan is cheaper than every live pay as you go option in the table.

Every figure comes from the provider's own pricing page or published terms, read on 18 September 2026, and assumes a three minute average call (30, 90 and 225 minutes). Per-minute rows move with your real call length, and per-call rows do not. Taxes, after-hours surcharges and add-ons are excluded. Confirm current pricing with the provider before you sign.

Is there an answering service with no monthly fee?

Yes, two, and both come with conditions worth reading. AnswerAmerica sells prepaid credits at $1.47 a call, dropping to $1.14 on larger packages, with a $50 minimum purchase and no monthly fee. Smith.ai's AI receptionist has a Free plan at $0 a month that includes 25 calls and charges $3.00 for each call after that.

The AnswerAmerica catches are in its terms rather than on its price page. A month with no calls still uses one credit. Credits are not refunded. And while the price page describes wrong numbers and hoax calls as free, the terms say that from 1 March 2026 every call, including hang-ups, wrong numbers and marketing calls, uses a credit. Those two statements conflict, so ask which applies before you prepay. The Smith.ai Free plan is answered by AI, not people, and requires 30 days' notice to cancel.

Everything else sold in the US as pay as you go keeps a base fee. From lowest: AnsweringService.com at $20, ReceptionHQ at $25, AnswerFirst at $30, Specialty Answering Service at $44, Professional Answering Service at $45, The Perfect Answer at $47 and PATLive at $49. A few of those say "no minimum minutes", which is true, but the base fee is charged whether the phone rings or not.

How much does a pay as you go answering service cost per call?

Between about $1.47 and $9 per answered call at US providers, depending on whether the meter is per call or per minute. Per-call services are the predictable ones: AnswerAmerica charges $1.47, ReceptionHQ $1.99 for message taking and $2.99 when transfers are included, and AnsweringService.com $2.10 to $3.15. The per-minute services look cheaper per unit but multiply by call length. At three minutes, Professional Answering Service works out to $2.70 a call, The Perfect Answer $4.11, Specialty Answering Service $4.62, AnswerFirst $4.80 to $5.85 and PATLive $8.97.

Rounding changes those numbers more than most buyers notice. PATLive bills the first minute in full and then in six second steps, Specialty Answering Service and AnswerFirst bill by the second, and Professional Answering Service bills in six second steps with the first six seconds free. A 40 second call costs a full minute at PATLive and 40 seconds at the per-second services. If a lot of your calls are short, such as "are you open Saturday" or a wrong number, per-second billing and per-call pricing with a spam filter matter more than the headline rate. ReceptionHQ, for example, does not charge for calls under five seconds or calls it identifies as spam.

When does a flat monthly plan beat pay as you go?

Sooner than most people expect. Put each pay as you go plan against a flat $89 plan and find the call count where they cost the same. PATLive crosses at about 5 calls a month. Specialty Answering Service and The Perfect Answer cross at about 10. AnswerFirst crosses at 10 to 12, and Professional Answering Service at about 16. The message-only per-call services last longer: ReceptionHQ MessageExpress and AnsweringService.com cross at about 32 to 33 calls, Smith.ai's free AI plan at about 55, and AnswerAmerica at about 60.

So the honest rule is this. If your business genuinely takes fewer than about ten calls a month that need answering, pay as you go is the right buy, and AnswerAmerica or a per-call message service will be cheaper than any flat plan. Between roughly ten and sixty calls, it depends on whether you need a message taken or the job actually handled. Above sixty, a flat rate answering service costs less than every pay as you go option we found, and it stays the same price in the month your volume doubles.

That last point is the one that catches people. Pay as you go is priced for a quiet month. The month you run a promotion, the week after a storm, or tax season for an accountant is exactly when a metered plan produces its biggest bill, and exactly when you can least afford to hesitate about answering the phone. The full arithmetic across billing models is laid out in the answering service cost breakdown.

What do pay as you go plans leave out?

Mostly the part of the call that makes money. The cheapest rows in the table are message-taking plans: someone answers in your business name, takes the caller's name, number and reason, and emails or texts it to you. Nobody books the appointment, quotes your hours from your own information, or qualifies the lead. ReceptionHQ sells booking separately under its MyDiary tier, charged per minute. Smith.ai's human receptionists charge $1.50 per booking on top of the call. Most per-minute services include scheduling only on higher plans or bill it as an add-on.

Surcharges are the second gap. ReceptionHQ adds $0.20 a call outside 5am to 7pm Mountain time on weekdays and on federal holidays for MessageExpress, $0.30 on ReceptionistPlus, and longer calls can need a paid "Plus Pack" from $0.27 a call. Refunding unused prepaid credit at ReceptionHQ costs a $30 admin fee. None of that is hidden, but none of it is in the headline price either.

The third gap is capacity. A live service answers one call per receptionist, and pay as you go customers are the lowest-revenue accounts on the floor. An AI receptionist answers every call at once, which is why several AI vendors can sell flat plans at all. If you are weighing people against software for a small office, cheap answering service for small business prices nine low-cost options at 30 and 75 calls with that trade in mind.

Which pay as you go answering service should you choose?

Choose on your real call count, not your guess. Pull last month's inbound calls and average call length from your phone records, because most owners underestimate both. Then use the table.

  • Under 10 calls a month, and a message is enough: AnswerAmerica's prepaid credits or ReceptionHQ MessageExpress. Read AnswerAmerica's terms on which calls use a credit first.
  • Under 25 calls, and software is fine: Smith.ai's free AI plan costs nothing until call 26.
  • You want a live person and you take 10 to 30 longer calls: Professional Answering Service has the lowest published per-minute rate at $0.90, with six second billing.
  • More than about 30 calls, or you need the appointment booked: a flat AI plan. PhoneAgent.ai is $89 a month on Starter for about 150 calls, answers every call 24/7, and books into Google Calendar, Outlook, Calendly or Acuity during the call, with no minute meter and no per-booking fee. Plans and limits are on the PhoneAgent.ai pricing page.

If you are a solo practitioner, the phone is usually one of several admin jobs pulling you off paid work. The calls are worth covering properly, and so is the rest: an AI office assistant that schedules meetings and drafts email handles the inbox and calendar side of the same problem.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pay as you go answering service?

It is an answering service that bills for the calls or minutes it actually answers instead of a fixed bundle. In the US most still charge a small monthly base fee, typically $20 to $49, plus a per-call rate of about $1.47 to $3.15 or a per-minute rate of about $0.90 to $2.99, based on September 2026 pricing pages.

Is pay as you go cheaper than a monthly answering service plan?

Only at low volume. Against a flat $89 plan, per-minute pay as you go plans stop being cheaper at about 5 to 16 calls a month, and per-call message services at about 32 to 60 calls. Below those counts pay as you go wins. Above them the flat plan costs less and does not rise in a busy month.

Do pay as you go answering services charge for spam calls?

It depends on the provider. ReceptionHQ does not charge for calls under five seconds or calls it identifies as spam, and Smith.ai filters known spam. AnswerAmerica's terms say every call uses a credit from 1 March 2026, including wrong numbers and marketing calls. Ask each provider how robocalls and hang-ups are billed before you sign.

Can a pay as you go answering service book appointments?

Usually not on the cheapest plans, which only take messages. Booking is typically a higher tier or an add-on: ReceptionHQ sells it as MyDiary, billed per minute, and Smith.ai charges $1.50 per booking on its human plans. PhoneAgent.ai books into your calendar during the call on every plan, from a flat $89 a month.

Is there a contract with pay as you go answering services?

Rarely. PATLive, Specialty Answering Service, AnswerFirst, Professional Answering Service, The Perfect Answer and ReceptionHQ all publish month-to-month or no lock-in terms. Watch the notice periods and refund rules instead: Smith.ai asks for 30 days' notice, and AnswerAmerica does not refund unused credits.

The short version

Real pay as you go, with no monthly fee, exists in the US at AnswerAmerica ($1.47 a call, prepaid) and on Smith.ai's free AI plan ($3.00 a call after 25). Everything else charges a $20 to $49 base plus a meter. It is the right buy under about ten calls a month when a message is enough. Past that point, or the moment you need the appointment booked rather than a message taken, a flat plan wins, and at $89 a month PhoneAgent.ai undercuts every live per-minute option above about 16 calls and every pay as you go option we found above about 60.
